Earlier this year, a massive data breach at Financial Business and Consumer Solutions put millions of Americans’ personal information at risk. Now, the fallout has spread to Comcast and Truist Bank, bringing serious new consequences. Hello, everyone! I’m Chris Swinson, technology insider here at Rocket IT, and welcome to Sync Up, your new home for trending technology news.
Back in February of this year, FBCS experienced a data breach, allowing cybercriminals to steal sensitive information from their records.
Now, let’s talk about what was taken. The attackers got their hands on names, Social Security Numbers, dates of birth, account information, and driver’s license numbers. Initially, FBCS believed that around 1.9 million people were affected. But as the investigation continued, that number rose to 4.2 million individuals by July. Obviously, this puts a huge number of people at a heightened risk for identity theft and other malicious activities.
Now, fast forward a few months and both Comcast and Truist Bank have been notified of new information regarding the massive breach. Despite FBCS’s earlier reassurances, both Comcast and Truist recently disclosed that they were also impacted by this breach. For Comcast, specifically, about 273,000 customers had their data exposed. For Truist Bank, the exact number of affected customers hasn’t been shared yet, but given the size of the bank, it could be significant.
What’s really interesting here is the timeline. Comcast didn’t find out that their customer data was involved until July, months after FBCS initially claimed that their customers weren’t affected. Truist Bank sent out letters to their customers about the breach in mid-September, making it clear that this information is only just coming to light.
These new details about the breach were revealed when Comcast submitted a notice to authorities in Maine. It was through this official report that the full extent of the breach came to light, contradicting FBCS’s earlier statements.
As a result of this breach, FBCS is now dealing with a worsening financial situation, which means Comcast, Truist, and their customers have to manage the remediation process on their own. This situation shows just how severe the consequences of a data breach can be, not just for companies, but also the customers they support.
